WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

This is a two-day on-location workshop for up-and-coming leaders aged 18-40 years. Its purpose is to provide future Alberta leaders with the tools, insight and connections to promote sustainable water use.

For many human populations water is a sacred component of cultures, their traditions and teachings throughout the world. We will examine the foundational ethics behind spirituality and stewardship through multiple perspectives (Aboriginal teachings, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism). Water is a vulnerable entity in the 21st that demands an assessment of how spirituality directly, or indirectly, influences water governance.

The elements of this workshop include:

Explore: the various faith and non-faith based perceptions of water in a practical (mandatory utilization – daily, ceremonial etc.) and spiritual (metaphoric references as in holy texts, teachings etc.) sense.

Discuss: together, with local cultural groups, raise questions, generate ideas, and establish a vision regarding the future of our water – inspired through faith and spirituality. Establish how to foster collaboration in theory and practice.

Reflect: on the manifestation of ‘responsibility’ (both individually and communally) as directed by faith and spiritual morality; such as dealing with matters of stewardship – protection and conservation, and governance.

Through experiential field tours of religious sites, participants will be exposed to a variety of ways water is used in spiritual settings and to influential leaders navigating our future. The group will also explore, through interactive dialogue and group activities, innovative ideas for sustainable change.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 23, 2012

Please note that this workshop is open to those living in Alberta, aged 18-40 yrs. Individuals from all faiths are welcomed and encouraged. Download the complete invitation, above, for all the details!

Amanda Jackson, Campaigns & Policy Coordinator for Micah Challenge International, writes about the state of women in the Global South, and how poverty affects them in greater ways than men. She writes:

“It is women who must bear the brunt of increasing poverty and decreased opportunity.

We need to proclaim that all life is precious – that girls in Afghanistan are precious, that girl babies are just as precious as boy babies and that women working as servants and in factories contribute economically as much as high flying women (or men) in the corporate world.

Women also need to respect other girls and women – unfortunately when women are disempowered by poverty and have no role in decision making, they can perpetuate injustice, just like Sahar Gul’s female in-laws.

We need women and men of faith who are willing to take a stand for girls and women who have no protection and no power. And we need to remember that we can bring change.”

In light of our upcoming conference on consumerism, here’s a good read from the U of A’s Parkland Institute:

The Debt Crisis: A case of false memory syndrome

by Trevor Harrison

“The acclaimed author, Milan Kundera, has written that, “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” But the ongoing world financial crisis shows how false memories can fool us and make us unable to confront corporate power.

For over a year, we have been bombarded with stories of the threat of “sovereign defaults.” The PIGS – one can imagine political conservatives salivating as they arrived at that acronym – Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain (to which add another “I” if one includes Ireland) have been roundly denounced for the size of their public debt to GDP (83 percent in Portugal, 94 percent in Ireland, 118 percent in Italy, 144 percent in Greece, and 63 percent in Spain). Then, to these countries as the year progressed was added the United States at 60 percent to GDP.

In terms of the latter, US debt is substantially lower than it was at end of the Second World War. Government spending helped win the war (in conjunction with the other Allied countries), while also pulling the country out of the Great Depression and, through the programs of the New Deal, set the stage for economic growth and a more egalitarian society in the decades that followed.”

For the rest of the article, click here.

Dr. Harrison is Professor of Sociology, Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Lethbridge. He is also co-director of the Parkland Institute.

The Parkland Institute is an Alberta research network situated within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. It operates within the established and distinctive tradition of Canadian political economy and is non-partisan.

Councillor Amarjit Sohi and Racism Free Edmonton, a City of Edmonton initiative, are invitingrepresentatives from agencies who work with immigrants to participate in three days of workshops.

The workshops will help participants to recognize issues of racism, understand the impact of racism on individuals and provide effective strategies for addressing these issues. The workshops are very interactive and provide opportunities for participants to share ideas and collaborate on creating action plans for groups, communities or organizations. The workshops will be delivered by skilled facilitators who have expertise in issues of anti-racism, methods of popular education, community development and organizational change.

Thanks to the generous support of Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the City of Edmonton, these valuable workshops are available at no cost to representatives of immigrant organizations, ethno-cultural groups, and communities who work with immigrants that experience racial discriminiation.
